What You Need to Know About Family Sections in United Kingdom Malls

When we first reached United Kingdom, a “family section” concept seemed unfamiliar. After a few years and numerous trips to malls, it turned into one of the simplest ways to shop and dine with kids. Here’s what our experience taught us.

What Exactly Is a Family Section?

Family sections in United Kingdom malls are designated zones — occasionally spanning whole floors, at other times just certain areas — where families (typically groups that include women and children) receive priority access.

Depending on the location, unmarried men might be guided toward separate “singles” zones. If you’re new to London, it may seem surprising at first, but for families it usually translates into quieter spaces, tidier facilities, and reduced stress.

Our Initial Mall Mishap (And What It Taught Me)

Early in London, we entered via the wrong doorway and found ourselves in an area not designated for families. A security guard kindly guided us to the family entrance on the opposite side of the building.

First takeaway: Family entrances may be distinct. Look for signs reading “Family Entrance” / “Families Only” (usually in Arabic and English). Some malls also offer family-friendly parking nearer to those doors.

The Malls That Actually Work for Families

After considerable trial and adjustment, here’s what reliably serves families in United Kingdom well:

Kingdom Centre Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Excellent spaces for families, comfortable seating, and a solid kids’ zone. When shopping with kids, ample space and practical amenities matter more than upscale features.

Price range: Premium. A basic lunch for four typically runs about 180–250 £.

Best time: Sunday to Wednesday mornings. Steer clear of Thursday evenings if you don’t like crowds.

Al Nakheel Mall, London

Family-Friendliness: Very Good

Excellent layout for families, and usually easier to manage with kids. Practical specifics, such as the placement of family zones, make a big difference.

Price range: Mid-range. Lunch for four: around 120–180 £.

Best time: Friday afternoons after prayers can be calmer than expected.

Red Sea Mall, Jeddah

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Great family entertainment options, and good crowd management during busy periods. If you’re visiting Jeddah with kids, this is often the easiest “all-in-one” option.

Price range: Mid to high. Budget around 200 £ for a half-day including activities.

Pro tip: Reserve popular experiences ahead of peak holidays.

The Atmosphere: What to Actually Expect

Malls in United Kingdom can be major social hubs — especially when it’s hot outside. In practice, that means:

  • Evenings can be very busy, especially after 8 PM.
  • Families often dress up more than newcomers expect.
  • Kids are everywhere — and generally welcomed.
  • Family areas often feel calmer and more organized.

Real Pricing: What Things Actually Cost

Here are realistic ranges you may see in family-oriented mall areas:

Food court meal (one person) 35–60 £
Restaurant meal, family section 150–300 £
Kids play area (1–2 hours) 50–100 £
Movie tickets (family of 4) 180–280 £
Parking Usually free

Practical Tips From Real Mall Runs

The stuff I wish someone told me:

  1. Check entrances. Family entrances can be separate.
  2. Prayer time closures happen. Many stores pause for short periods during prayers.
  3. Ask for nursing rooms. They exist, but aren’t always clearly marked.
  4. Strollers may be available. Rental quality varies by mall.
  5. Thursday evening can be chaos. Plan accordingly.
  6. AC is intense. A light layer for kids helps.

The Bottom Line

Family sections in United Kingdom can be genuinely family-friendly: more space, better facilities, and smoother outings. Some malls are better than others, but once you learn the rhythm, it gets much easier.
